8 Secrets to Perfect Hair in 2015
1. Have fun with accessories
Hair accessories are basically the shoes and handbags of the hair world, and they can instantly elevate your hairstyle. A sparkly barrette or luxe headband can take your go-to ‘do from drab to fab by adding visual interest and can also serve as one heck of a conversation starter.
Your hair goal: Try at least one new hair accessory this month. Whether you play around with bobby pins or try a stunning vintage-inspired bun pin like this one from Kitsch, it’s time to take your accessory game to the next level.
2. Stop settling at the salon
Just because you aren’t fluent in salon speak doesn’t mean you’re resigned to a life of stylist-dictated haircuts. And don’t pretend you haven’t been there, because we’ve all been bullied into a haircut we didn’t want because the stylist thought it’d look cute.
Your hair goal: This year, it’s time to stop suffering through haircuts that don’t match your vision and start speaking up about what you really want. Don’t be afraid to get honest about what cuts work best for your lifestyle; you’re paying for the new ‘do, after all. Consider bringing photo examples of you’re perfect cut so you’re both on the same page.
3. Give your shampoo a break
If you’ve never missed that daily date with your shampoo bottle, you might not be living up to your full hair potential. The more you shampoo, the more you strip away your hair’s natural oils, and the worse your hair can look in the long run. Shampoo-dependent hair can mean easily greasy hair and besides, wouldn’t it be nice to skip a shampoo every once in a while and squeeze in more Netflix time?
Your hair goal: Try to wash your hair no more than every other day. On off days when you’re first starting out, try a dry shampoo like Alterna Cleanse Extend Translucent Dry Shampoo in Sugar Lemon to mop up greasy strands.
4. Quit frying your hair
Most ladies are pretty tight with their hair styling tools, but those heat treating miracle workers can seriously damage your tresses over time if you don’t treat your locks to some much-needed TLC. All that straightening, blow drying and curling can result in fried strands, split ends, dry hair and more. And who wants that?
Your hair goal: Old habits are hard to kick, and we don’t think we’ll have much luck convincing you to quit your heat habit. What we can do is make sure you stop damaging your hair in the process by arming you with a post-styling treat like Oribe’s Conditioner for Moisture and Control and a pre-styling gem like Herbal Essences Set Me Up Heat Protection Spray.
5. Resolve to make a hair change
If you’re still rocking the same tired hairstyle from college, it’s time for a change, stat. We know change can seem a bit scary at first, but stepping outside of your hair comfort zone can really change your perception of yourself in the best of ways. Plus, a new hairstyle means oodles of compliments.
Your hair goal: No one said you have to go from long locks to a pixie cut; we’re just suggesting you think outside the box when it comes to your style in 2015. If you’ve been dedicated to the same color for years, consider switching things up with new highlights. If you’ve never strayed from your go-to length and don’t plan on doing so anytime soon, try bangs for a change. It’s all about little changes that make a big impact!
6. Embrace your curls
Hair is a lot like men: you can’t force it into doing something it simply doesn’t want to do without a little bit of coaxing. So instead of fighting your curls into submission, why not try embracing your natural locks for a change? You just might grow to appreciate (and, dare we say, love) your au naturel style.
Your hair goal: As a curly gal myself, I can tell you I was never happier than when I started embracing my curls instead of fighting reality. This January, try air drying or diffusing your curls just a few times, using a curling mousse like L’Oreal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Boost It Volume Inject Mousse. I’m pretty sure you’ll be addicted to your gorgeous natural spirals in no time!
7. Get creative with your styling
It’s so easy to get stuck in a style rut and wear the same look all the time. After all, we’re pretty loyal to our go-to ponytails and our beloved blowouts. But test driving a crazy braided updo or an insanely sleek wet look can switch up your look in a fun, refreshing way.
Your hair goal: Love following your fave celebs’ mane moves but always chicken out when it comes time to copying the complex ‘dos? It’s time to change that this year. In 2015, vow to try at least one cool new look each month. We’ve got loads of inspiration for you!
8. Switch up your product routine
You know how your body gets used to the same old workout routine if you never switch things up? Well your hair can get a bit complacent too if you never try something new, and lazy hair is never a good thing.
Your hair goal: We’re not suggesting you go on a product buying binge, but every once in a while it’s nice to try a new product type you haven’t experimented with before. Take oils, for example. They’re multitalented and can treat a range of hair woes. This year, we’ll be using White Sands Hair Care Orchids Hair Oil to add shine, softness and loads of moisture to our hair.
